Checkvist on the desktop with Fluid or Prism

Today as I was reading an article on novice vs. expert user behaviour, a thought occured to me that some Checkvist-related tricks we consider trivial, might be new and useful to others.

What if we start to share some of our favourite work patterns? I can start with Kir’s and mine common pattern, and please feel free to continue with your own tips :)

Just like a desktop app

We use Checkvist very often, and as usually we have dozens of tabs open in several browsers, it’s much more convenient to put Checkvist into dock or menu (Mac) or taskbar (Windows), be able to minimize it into tray, even assign keyboard shortcut to it, just like a desktop app.

This is easily available with help of two applications - Fluid (for Mac) and Prism (for Windows, Linux and Mac). Both are free and share similar installation process.

We use Fluid, but if you select Prism, the steps will be similar.

Install

  1. First, you must download Fluid.
  2. Then, create a Site Specific Browser, which is basically a desktop version of an online tool:
  3. Now you can always access it in one click:

Assign a shortcut

In the Fluid Checkvist menu select Preferences -> General where you can assign a global keyboard shortcut to bring it forward on the screen anytime.

Compact view trick

If you put http://checkvist.com/iframe.html into the URL field and then select Convert to MenuExtraSSB…

you can use Checkvist compact view which is used in the FireFox or Chrome extension:

Now you can forget about browser tabs, invoke Checkvist from your dock, menu or desktop, just like any other desktop app. Happy listing!
